DIY Knotted Sun Hat

Inspired by Sag Harbor, I have been seeing a lot of sailboats, tied to docks on my beautiful walk into work.  I decided to add a little nautical flare to my little sun hat for the summer.  Here’s what I did…

What you will need:

  1. A hat
  2. 2 yards of thick rope (I could have even gone a little thicker).  I also have a small head, so you may want to get more than 2 yards.
  3. Scissors
  4. Hot glue gun

Step 1: Tying the knot

Cut the rope into 2 pieces, remember that one piece will wrap around the hate farther, so make one side a little longer.  Once they are cut, fold them in half and lay the ends down, one on top of the other.  Like this:
Then pull the tails of the top rope through the loop of the bottom rope.
Then pull.  Not too tight! You want the knot to keep it’s shape and not be too small.

Step 2:

Wrap the rope around the hat with the knot centered on one side.  Once you have the correct measurement, cut the ropes and tape the edges so they don’t fray.
Take a glue gun the glue the ends together to make your loop, and then wrap a small piece of rope around the seem to cover where they connect, and you’re done! Super easy new hat!
Super cute for Summer and Memorial Day!
