When I was in 4th grade, my teacher Mrs. Gunning, made us memorize all of Psalm 139. If you’re not familiar with this passage, it’s not short. It’s 24 verses to be precise. And everyone who sat in the little wooden desks of her classroom knew the words. I still joke with my friends…decades away from fourth grade…that we still know most of the verses by heart.
“O Lord, You search me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; You perceive my thoughts from afar…Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast. … For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well….”
How grateful I am to that teacher, for sewing encouragement into the hearts of her fourth graders. We had no idea how much we would need it, but she did. She knew we would have to face middle school, and high school, and life. And that we should know that God is bigger; He is always there no matter how far away we think we are; and that we are fearfully and wonderfully made.
It’s easy to forget. You’d think the flowers, clouds, sunsets, would remind us that we are made by the same hands that formed them. Hands that produce beauty and wisdom and joy and peace and kindness. Instead we see ourselves through the lens the world holds out in front of us. A lens that tells us to filter, air brush, fix, and hate ourselves. I think it’s high time we got new glasses! and see ourselves as wonderful. Wonderful: an adjective meaning great, excellent, marvelous. We are wonderfully made. Fearfully made, with care. We are here for a purpose. We are loved. We have value. You have value. Great value.
Our favorite part of this job is getting to introduce you guys to some amazing brands that are making a difference. In this post we get to introduce you to two!
How We Soul and Wonderfully Made. How We Soul is a giveback, ecofriendly, and ethically made clothing brand that took the active wear we all want to live in and made it a reality! and Wonderfully Made is a non-profit and ecofriendly brand, on a mission to help women and girls know their God given value.
How We Soul donates a portion of each sale directly to the incredible Botswana Orphan Project, which provides daycare and pre-school to young orphans and vulnerable children. This project allows children to remain living with their extended family while also providing education, healthy meals, and a safe, loving environment to grow. Soul just launched their new legging line, and that makes my heart just as happy as my legs when I wear them.
(This shot was a mistake, but I think it’s my favorite.)
